Southwest Airlines Airline Transport Pilot Rating Scholarship (AMEL)
Purpose:
Southwest Airlines will award six airline transport pilot rating scholarships to qualified women who are members of Women in Aviation. Scholarship awards are not offers of employment, nor any guarantee or promise of employment at Southwest Airlines, which is an equal opportunity employer.
If selected, pilots will receive the following training and certification during the four- to five-day program:
- 10 hours of ground school*
- Five hours in flight training device (simulator)*
- Up to four flight training events in multiengine propeller aircraft; two hours each (approximately eight hours of flight time)*
- FAA designated pilot examiner’s fee and use of the aircraft for FAA checkride
*Training times are approximate and may be reduced based upon the pilot’s knowledge and skill level.
Eligibility:
- Must have a FAA private and instrument rating
- Must have a current FAA first class medical certificate
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must be enrolled in an accredited collegiate aviation four-year degree program; must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA
- FAA commercial airplane, multiengine land instrument, required
- Current FAA third-class medical certificate required (will be required to obtain a first-class medical to exercise ATP privileges)
Value:
$5,000.00 each, 6 scholarships
Application Submission Process and Completion Date:
- Applications are due in by November 14, 2016 in order to be considered for the following year, awarded at the annual Women in Aviation Conference.
- Please submit a single page essay that reflects how the scholarship will help you reach your professional career goals.
- Two letters of recommendation—one from a school faculty member who works directly with you who can attest to your career aspirations and another from someone who can attest to your flying ability.
- An official copy of most recent semester transcript
- Copies of your pilot certificate and first class medical
- A list of Women in Aviation volunteer functions you have performed

Selection Process:
All scholarships, unless otherwise noted, will be awarded during the Annual International Women in Aviation Conference.
